With your tickets to Casa Gourgion, you’ll step into the neo-Gothic elegance of this 19th-century residence and museum. It was once the home of Baron Giuseppe De Piro Gourgion, a well-known figure for his devotion, eccentric personality, and presence in Malta’s sociopolitical circles.
Inside, you’ll find carefully restored rooms where the original furniture tells the story of the baron’s daily life. Did you know many of his favorite pieces were acquired during his travels around Europe? You’ll be able to visit Pinu’s study, complete with his desk and leather armchair. You can also step into the reading room, whose traditional Maltese wooden balcony frames beautiful views of Mdina’s main square.
You’ll also discover his bedroom and bathroom. There, among the bed canopy and a gilded mirror, you can easily imagine the baron perfecting his distinctive dandy style. On the ground floor, you’ll walk through the living rooms and dining room, where formal lunches and meetings with influential figures once took place. You’ll admire silver tableware and delicate floral ceiling decorations inspired by the Italian Stile Floreale.
Make sure to head down to the basement to explore the permanent exhibitions, covering everything from the history of Mdina to the legacy of architect Andrea Vassallo. The visit ends in the rear garden, a peaceful retreat where you can admire the neo-Gothic facade.
The Casa Gourgion Museum is open from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Please note that the last admission is at 4:30 pm.
